Undoubtedly everyone has heard of Windows Live Messenger (formerly known as MSN Messenger), the Instant Messaging client from Microsoft, and now you are about to find out how to make it less annoying. Amongst many of it’s pro-s and con-s, Windows Live Messenger is rather loud and disturbing. Alert Dialogs and Notifications keep popping up when you least expect them, snapping you out of your favorite movie or music track, you have to love Microsoft for that.

The Sign In/Sign Out pop-up has to be one of the most annoying features of Windows Live Messenger. Putting aside the fact that its large and takes up a big part of your screen it’s also loud and bugging.

Here is how to turn off the Windows Messenger Live pop-ups and sounds:

1. Open your Windows Live Messenger and Sign in.
2. Go to Menu/Tools/Options
3. Select Alerts

Now from here you can basically take care of all the alerts Windows Live Messenger has to throw at you. You can disable the Sign In/Sign Out alerts, the Message Received alert, e-mail alert and others. After unchecking the alerts you don’t want, its time to take care of the sound problem as follows :

1. From Menu/Tools/Options select Sounds
2. Here you can go all out and check the Mute all sounds checkbox, blissful silence.
3. Or you can take your time and play with the options checking or unchecking various boxes.

Weather  you go all out mute or keep some of the sounds and alerts, your Instant Messaging experience has just been improved. Windows Live Messenger has just been turned from the raging loud beast Microsoft has sent on us into a docile little puppy.
