HTC Droid Incredible Android 2.2 manual update guide

Posted on 01. Sep, 2010 by Free PC Guides in Android How To, How To

If you don’t want to wait for the HTC Droid Incredible Android 2.2 update to be delivered “over-the-air”, now you can manually update your Incredible to FroYo in just a few simple steps.

Just before we start this Android 2.2 manual update for the Incredible, let it be said that this works only if you’ve got a non-rooted, stock handset. You should also note that we don’t host the update.zip file, instead the link will direct you to Google’s servers. Don’t worry if you are not very tech savvy, just follow the steps and you should do fine.

Step 1. Download the update.zip file and make sure it is called “update.zip” and not “update.zip.ZIP”.

Step 2. Place the “update.zip” file on the root of your SD card (that’s directly on the letter of the card, don’t place it in any folder).

Step 3. Turn of your Incredible. Now power it back on while pressing the Volume Down button. The phone should now go into its HBOOT mode.

Step 4. Select “Recovery” (use volume keys to navigate and power to select). When the “exclamation mark and triangle” screen appear, press and hold both Volume Up and Down at the same time.

Step 5. Select “apply sdcard:update.zip” (volume keys to navigate, power to select).

Step 6. Wait for your Droid Incredible to install the Android 2.2 update, then reboot your phone.

You now should be running the FroYo version of Android.

I tried this and I can’t get past the ! and Triangle screen. I try holding the volume up and down keys simultaneously, but nothing comes up. I’m guessing this means the file is incorrect or not in the correct location? I downloaded the file from the link above, called it update.zip and placed it on the root of my SD card. Any thoughts??? Thanks!

    This step is wrong!

Step 4. Select “Recovery” (use volume keys to navigate and power to select). When the “exclamation mark and triangle” screen appear, press and hold both Volume Up and Down at the same time.

    It should be:

Step 4. Select “Recovery” (use volume keys to navigate and power to select). When the “exclamation mark and triangle” screen appear, press and hold both Volume Up and Power Button at the same time.

After further researching, I found that Step 4 is incorrect.

You need to press the Volume Up and the Power button in order to get to Step 5.

The end of step 4 should be “press Volume up and Power buttons at the same time”…

Step 4 is wrong, it’s the volume up key and the power button at the same time. http://phandroid.com/2010/09/01/manually-update-your-droid-incredible-to-android-2-2-froyo/

Step 4 is wrong. At the triangle-! screen, press volume up and the power button. Then use volume down and the power button to select apply sdcard:update.zip. I used a file manager from the Android market to move and rename the file. Never had to connect to a computer. :) After rebooting the phone will likely sit at the Droid Eye for about 2 minutes and then do some more startup/installing after that.

Just did it! First of all, STEP 4 above should say you have to hold the Volume Up and Power, not Volume Up and Volume Down, to get to the menu where you can select to install the update. Second, I got an Error in SD Card (Status 7) message. After doing some research, I found that apparently I never got some OTA update which came out in May to update my software. If you didn’t get this message, you’re lucky and are now running 2.2. If you did, you just have to download one more file and do the same steps. Here’s a good link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770091 If after installing the software update your phone insists that the sd card is empty, just reboot it, and it should show all the files there. Now run the 2.2 update.zip file and you’re good to go. Easy as 1,2…oh that didn’t work, google it, 3,4,5, oh wait, google some more..6,7 8..DONE!

My coworker received his update yesterday and we’re in the same area code. I still didn’t get mine by the time I got home yesterday so I followed a different guide, similar to this one. Worked flawlessly!

good guide, except the only problem is in Step 4. you said to hold “Volume up and down at the same time” rather than what it should say, volume up and POWER at the same time.

Instructions are not quite spot on…..
    1. Downloaded file is a huge file name. You must rename it to update.
    2. When the exclamation mark/triangle appears, you must hold the up vol and down vol AND POWER key together to get to the select sdcard: update screen
    3. The updating process is a new screen (a green logo) of sorts..takes a few minutes and blinks off a time or two.
    4. The splash screen/droid sound/red eye screen appears to hang. It’s not..just have to wait a few minutes – I thought mine was bricked…just lay it down and let it sit. Don’t pull battery as I did,

Eventually gets to a working phone….

    Everything works fine except..

Step 4 should read — When the exclamation point and triangle appear press the “Volume up and power button together” Volume up and down together doesn’t do anything on my handset.

Well you spend about 6 hours out of your day..if you know what your doing.. to revert your phone to the original factory image and get rid of CLoMod… then hope that you have a backup of everything somewhere..then boot factory image and wait for your phone to tell that you are ready for an update ota!! i wouldn’t suggest it.

Nah, it takes about half an hour to revert back to stock/unrooted 2.1 and then go through this.
