It’s official! Valve have set a release date for Portal 2 : February 9, 2011. We still have to wait about half a year, but now at least we know when the waiting will end. The game was initially meant to arrive in Q4 2010, but Valve decided to postpone it, after they announced at E3 that the game will also be available on PC, PS 3 and Mac via Steam. To be more precise, the game will only be available as a retail for PS 3 and Xbox 360.
Portal 2 is an action/puzzle game, the sequel to the well received Portal (2007) which was announced in March this year. In this game, the player will return as Chell, after hundreds of year of stasis, while GLaDOS (another character from the first part), as well as the rest of the Aperture Science facility (which she operated) have been slowly decaying. The awakening of Chell leads to that of GLaDOS too. The game will have the player solve tons of platforming and physics-based puzzles by using the portal gun, which can create a temporary hole between any two surfaces. Valve has also added tractor beams, laser redirection as well as special paint-like gels, taken from the Tag: The Power of Paint, a game made by DigiPen students who won at the Independent Games Festival. Postal 2 will also feature a two-player co-op mode, with each one of them being a robot that has become self-aware from GLaDOS authority.

Another great piece of news is that Stephen Merchant will be lending out his voice for the game. He will play Wheatley, the spherical robot helper, which appeared in the latest Portal 2 trailer. Fans were upset with the robot’s annoying tone, so they’ll be delighted to hear that the famous English actor (and also one of the co-creators of The Office) accepted the role.
Portal 2 is available for pre-ordering from Amazon for PC and Mac, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
