Verizon’s HTC Droid Eris gets the Android 2.1 update it needed

While we found it pretty disappointing that Verizon Wireless was delaying the HTC Droid Eris’ Android 2.1 update, the wait is finally over today as Verizon started delivering it. The update to the Android 2.1 OS is scheduled to take place over a period of two weeks. The rollout begun on a rather small scale of only 1,000 Droid Eris users but Verizon’s intentions are that all devices get the firmware update by next week. Here’s a peak at some improvements and enhancements the Android 2.1 will bring to HTC Droid Eris owners: pinch-to-zoom availability for the Gallery and Google Maps, new support for voice-to-text entries, location-based weather information, the presence of Desk Clock which will be able to display the time while charging, extra calendar views, easier access to contacts, new leap thumbnail view on the home screen, traffic-enabled and turn-by-turn navigation using Google Maps, support for nineteen Microsoft Exchange Server Policies, possibility to log on multiple Google accounts at the same time, enhanced Android Market.

Along with these enhancements some new interesting stuff will also come along with the Android 2.1 OS, such as power saving options that will increase the battery’s life, contact transfer available via Bluetooth, better YouTube playback, faster power-up time, support for documents in Microsoft Office 2007 format, improved swipe-unlock feature, stand-alone Wi-Fi in airplane mode, support for Free Yahoo! Mail, automatic settings for POP3 verizon.net email accounts and the list can go on, but it’s a lot more fun if you discover some by yourselves in the next few weeks as you advance to the 2.1 version of Android.

It seems that all this waiting and Verizon nerve playing with all you Droid Eris owners was not in vain as the Android 2.1 operating system will make it worth your wait.
